XZH TEST completed a 10kV power cable fault detection project for an industrial client, combining low-voltage pulse and high-voltage flashover methods to locate a main-insulation fault on a cable 1038.88 metres long. The fault was pinpointed 345.72 metres from the test end, and the findings point to a likely problem at an intermediate joint. The following is the full test report summary.

Rough Location

The rough fault distance was measured using the low-voltage pulse method and the high-voltage flashover method. A high-voltage impulse flashover waveform was captured, and the fault point was found to be 345.72 m from the test end.

Waveform Analysis

The captured waveforms were analysed as follows:

Using the low-voltage pulse waveform, the total length of the cable was measured at 1038.88 m.
Using the high-voltage flashover method, when the voltage was raised to 22 kV the fault broke down and a fault waveform was captured. Analysis of that waveform showed a fault distance of 345.72 m.
Precise Location
Cable route survey: the cable is laid in trenches and the route was basically clear, so no route tracing was carried out.
Main-insulation fault location: directly above the cable route, within the rough range given by the high-voltage flashover, the 503E+ pinpoint locator was used to search.

With the voltage raised to about 22 kV, the search proceeded along the cable route, and the discharge sound of the fault point was heard at about 345.72 m from the test end, confirming the fault location.

Test Summary
For cables that can still operate normally but show a relatively low insulation resistance, the low-resistance phase should be investigated to prevent unexpected outages; in most cases this kind of problem is caused by one of the intermediate joints.
For faults that cannot be broken down in a short time, burn-through is needed to further reduce the fault resistance and establish a stable fault path, so that the fault can be located.
